We are currently looking for individuals to fill the following Summer Camp positions at Camp La Jita. Camp La Jita meaning “precious possession” was aptly chosen as the name for our resident camp on the beautiful Sabinal River near Utopia, Texas. Camp La Jita rests on 236 acres of Texas Hill Country land, one hour and twenty minutes west of San Antonio.
Kitchen/Food Supervisor
Reports to: Assistant Camp Director
Purpose: To administer and supervise the food planning, purchasing, preparation, and service for the camp; to see that health standards are maintained in the camp dining area and kitchen. Serves a member of administrative staff to the Camp Director and/or Assistant Camp Director
Principal Duties:
- Help with healthful, well-balanced menus within budget.
- Orders food using supplier list approved by director; checks food delivery against food orders, approves bills.
- Sets up and maintains dining hall procedures.
- Assures proper quantities of food served on time at each meal.
- Directs the work of the cooks, other food handlers, handy persons, and dishwashers
- Sees that dining hall, kitchen, and food storage areas meet Girl Scout and ACA standards and state and local health laws in such areas as dishwashing, care of leftover food, sanitation, and fire safety.
- Supervises sanitation procedures, such as dishwashing and the cleaning and mopping of the kitchen and dining hall. Assures that kitchen and dining hall are maintained in clean condition.
- Coordinates meal planning with special activities such as theme meals.
- Maintains inventories; keeps records (menus, meals served, food bought, cost per camper meals); makes necessary reports.
- Participates in camp opening and closing, pre and post inventories, and end of season camp evaluation.
- Participates in a written evaluation of her/his work at the close of season with Camp Director.
- Conducts performance reviews with all cooks and kitchen staff.
- Will have direct communication with the health director related to dietary needs of campers and staff.
- Assists in food preparation and service in the kitchen and dining hall
- Helps serve the meal by filling plates and bowls for hoppers.
- Carries out any other duties as assigned
Job Qualifications:
- Must be at least 25 years of age
- Successful completion of a background check
- High school diploma or equivalent (some college preferred)
- First Aid and CPR certified is highly preferred
- Attend training sessions for the position June 5, 2023 – June 9, 2023
- Must be available to reside on camp site from June 11, 2023 – August 5, 2023 (some weekends required, with alternate day off)
- Must have a valid Driver’s License and reliable means of transportation
- Must have experience working in a commercial kitchen
- ServSafe Manager certified (or willing to complete within 7 days of start date)
- Ability to effectively communicate orally
- Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards of the site and facilities and camper and staff behavior.
- Ability to provide first aid and to assist campers and staff in an emergency.
Physical and Environmental Demands:
- Physical mobility and endurance to perform tasks while standing/walking for long periods of time (60 minutes or more).
- Ability to lift and carry 30 pounds including unloading food, supplies, and equipment as need.
- Ability to safely and properly use kitchen equipment.
- Ability to determine cleanliness of dishes, food surfaces, and kitchen area.
- Willingness to live in a camp setting and work irregular hours with available equipment and facilities.
