We are currently looking for individuals to fill the following Summer Camp positions at Camp La Jita. Camp La Jita meaning “precious possession” was aptly chosen as the name for our resident camp on the beautiful Sabinal River near Utopia, Texas. Camp La Jita rests on 236 acres of Texas Hill Country land, one hour and twenty minutes west of San Antonio.

                                                                         Nurse/Health Supervisor

                                                                         Reports to: Camp Director 

Purpose: The Health Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the health and safety of campers and staff.

Principal Duties:

  • Confers with camp physician on Standing Orders and procedures to follow for the duration of camp
  • Prepares requisitions for necessary supplies.
  • Cares for the physical well-being of everyone in camp. Takes care of all cases of illness and accident of campers and staff under the direction of the camp physician.
  • Checks each incoming camper individually upon arrival to camp. Check individual health forms of incoming campers and staff; follows up on any pertinent information with the individual and the staff member responsible.
  • Maintain the Health Center and reports all cases of illness or injury to the director.
  • Keeps heath records; records all treatment in bound book and other health information including insurance claims.
  • Maintains first aid equipment for units, waterfront, kitchen, horseback riding areas, ropes course, vehicles, and other key locations.
  • Assists the Camp Director and Assistant Director in maintaining proper sanitation and safety throughout the camp, including kitchen and dining hall.
  • Perform a daily inspection of each unit including kitchen, staff quarters and all staff areas.
  • Inventories all medical supplies at the end of the camp season; disposing of items that cannot be kept through the winter, packing for storage supplies that are useable.
  • Prepares records for office files, including health forms for all campers and staff, inventories, daily treatment sheets, individual health records, and accident and illness insurance forms.
  • Is responsible for cleanliness of the Health Center and for laundry.
  • Notifies Camp Director immediately of all serious illnesses and accidents.
  • Is familiar with and implements all ACA guidelines for health services.
  • Transports any ill or injured person to the doctor or the hospital when needed.
  • Acts as a host/hostess for camp visitors and parents.
  • Attends administrative and weekly staff meetings.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Job Qualifications:

  • Must be at least 25 years of age
  • Successful completion of a background check
  • Registered nurse (RN) or EMT with a license as required by state law.
  • CPR certified
  • Current First aid certification and experience in first aid and emergency management.
  • Experience in both children and adult illness/injury care
  • Desire to work with children and young adults
  • Community health knowledge
  • Ability to read and follow directions on medication labels, health forms, physician orders, and parent letters
  • Ability to maintain written record system
  • Ability to communicate with parents, staff, and administration about camper health concerns
  • Possess endurance to meet emergency needs
  • Ability to drive to off-camp health provider, physician, or emergency treatment locations
  • Attend training sessions for the position June 5, 2023 – June 9, 2023
  • Must reside at camp June 11, 2023 – August 5, 2023 (some weekends are required, will be given an alternate day off)
  • Must have a valid Driver’s License and reliable means of transportation

Physical and Environmental Demands:

  • Continuous outdoor activity and exposure to weather (heat, sun, humidity, etc.).
  • Frequent sitting, standing, walking, bending, and twisting of the upper body.
  • Strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers.
  • Capable of lifting 30 pounds.
  • Willingness to live in a camp setting and work irregular hours with available equipment and facilities.
